The E.C. Glass High School Theatre Department will perform Hairspray as its spring musical for the 2018-19 season. The performance will run April 25-26 and May 2-4 at 7 p.m. in the E.C. Glass Auditorium. For tickets, visit www.ecglasstheatre.org/box-office .
“Hairspray is big, fun, and full of energy,” said Allison Daugherty, artistic director of Glass Theatre. “Lots of dancing, singing, and music. It’s a period piece with great costumes and sets.”
“It’s also a very inclusive show with a diverse cast that touches on relevant issues of race and integration,” she said. “The show literally asks the question ‘Why can’t we all dance together?’. Glass High School has a diverse student body and I want Glass Theatre to not just reflect that diversity but to celebrate and revel in it.”
In the show, teenager Tracy Turnblad achieves her dream of performing on a TV dance show in 1960s Baltimore — and works to integrate the show in the process — in the musical version of the John Waters film.
Hairspray replaces the previously announced production of Alice in Wonderland (scheduled April 5-7, 11-13, 2019), which has been cancelled.
“There were licensing limitations on Alice In Wonderland and I knew there was a better choice out there for the students,” said Daugherty. “We’re choosing new dates and a musical that welcomes collaboration with the Band, Chorus and Orchestra. E.C. Glass is so fortunate to have such a talented performing arts department and we’re excited about working together. Get out your teasing combs, warm up your twist. Hairspray is going to be a fun choice for everyone.”
Glass Theatre will honor all season tickets with Alice in Wonderland and will work with current season ticket holders regarding the change of date and production.
